Melvin “Mel” Muir Douglas: A Spirited 96-Year Ride

On the serene morning of June 29, 2024, Melvin “Mel” Muir Douglas laced up his celestial skates and glided peacefully into the next life from Jessica’s House Residential Hospice in Exeter. At the impressive age of 96, Mel left us as he lived—full of grace, a bit of mischief, and an abundance of love for life and family.

For 65 wonderful years, Mel was the adoring husband of the late Elia “Helen” Nazzarena Catarina (Miandro) Douglas, who likely went ahead to ensure their heavenly home was up to snuff. He was a beloved father to Kristie and father-in-law to the late David McIndoe of Grand Bend, sharing many a secret chuckle and sage advice.

Gramps to Skyler and his wife Tristan, and great-grandpa to Mathias, Finlay, Elijah, and Abbigail, Mel was their enthusiastic storyteller and wise sage. Remembered with affection by Andrew Hunt, Brooklyn Olsen, and Presley Wellington, Mel's legacy of joy and laughter will surely live on.

Mel’s younger years were marked by his prowess on ice. A seasoned figure skater of the London Skating Club, and an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Canadian Figure Skating Association, Mel dazzled onlookers with his elegant turns and leaps. He continued to influence the world of figure skating well into his 70s as a respected judge, bringing both rigor and warmth to the rink.

Not one to stay still, Mel was often seen pedaling around Grand Bend, where every road was familiar and every face a friend. He was equally at home in the waters of the lake, swimming with a vigor that belied his years. Above all, Mel loved his family, his heart’s true north, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

A steadfast supporter of the arts, he and Elia were nearly permanent fixtures at the Huron Country Playhouse, missing only one show in over 50 years. Mel also poured his heart into Bonnie Doone Manor-on-the-Beach (63 years) and the former Christmas Place, spreading holiday spirit and joy in Grand Bend.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Happy’s Place Senior Dog Rescue in Strathroy.  https://www.instagram.com/happys_senior_dogs/?hl=en, Huron Country Playhouse, or a charity of your choice. Better yet, honor Mel’s memory by performing an act of kindness or sharing a joyful moment—just as he would have wanted.

A Celebration of Life will be held where stories will be shared, laughter will soar, and Mel’s indomitable spirit will fill the air. To share condolences and memories, visit www.hoffmanfuneralhome.com. Here’s to Mel—a man who skated, cycled, and swam his way into the hearts of many.
